Gingerbread House
The sweet scent of festive treats – a popular winter warmer blending homemade gingerbread with cinnamon, cloves, maple syrup and vanilla to create a truly timeless scent of warm ovens and home baking.
Across the years preserved ginger, honey and spices have been blended together to create cookies and cakes, heralding for many, the deepest dark winter nights of Advent. In the early 1700’s members of the Scottish Parliament would take ‘Parliament Cake’ – a very spicy ginger shortbread with whisky, rum or brandy over their midday break - in a secret backroom (‘ben the hoose’) at a tavern in Edinburgh’s Potterrow.
The classic gingerbread man is said to originate from the court of Queen Elizabeth I, who served the figurines to visiting foreign dignitaries. Traditionally known as ‘Fairings’ due to their popularity at markets and county fairs, ginger biscuits were often given as a treat to children or exchanged between sweethearts.
